Facilities and medical units

List of existing medical units and the objectives of each of them
  • Sports psychology

Scientific study of the factors associated with participation and performance in sport, exercise and other types of physical activity, with two main objectives: on one side, to help athletes use psychological principles to improve their performance, and on the other side, to understand how participation in sport affects the psychological development of the individual, and his/her health and well-being throughout the life cycle

  • Kinanthropometry

Area of study that measures man in relation to movement. Its aim is to study the structure and morphology of the body, quantifying size, form, proportion and composition of the human being, relating structure with function

  • The physiology of effort

The working sphere of the Physiology of Effort Service looks toward functional evaluation of the athlete as well as caring for his/her state of health

  • Cardiology

Cardiological examination of athletes aims to uncover any heart-related illness or pathology that could constitute a life-threatening risk for the athlete, or represent an absolute, relative or temporary medical counter-indication for the practise of physical activity

  • Medicina interna, Endocrinología y Nutrición

Athletes are exposed not only to the normal medical problems we all face, but they also have to deal with many other specific problems as a result of their training

  • Clinical laboratory

The clinical laboratory carries out bio-chemical, haematological and hormonal analyses, as well as lactic acid analysis, etc. in blood and urine samples obtained from athletes. The clinical laboratory is accredited by the UCI (International Cyclists Union) for blood testing and monitoring of cyclists from professional teams

  • Locomotor apparatus

The Locomotor Apparatus Unit carries out medical/sports examinations from the point of view of the osteoarticular system, as well as diagnosis and treatment of sports injuries, with the aid of ecography of muscles and bones as a specific diagnostic technique

  • Physical readaptation and Physiotherapy

The aim of physical readaptation is the evaluation of and integral recuperation from sports injuries, until there is a full return to activity at the previous level. It also develops programmes for prevention of these injuries, through analysis of athletes’ muscular balance. Finally, it works in promotion of and collaboration with research activities in the field of neuromuscular mechanisms that intervene in the generation and coordination of muscular force

  • Postural image and dynamics

The Postural Image and Dynamics Unit has two main aims: on one side, to carry out, interpret and manage diagnostic trials based on the Image, vital for an adequate diagnosis of pathologies associated with sport; on the other side, to evaluate the dynamic behaviour of the locomotor apparatus, to prevent and treat anatomical and functional alterations (mainly of the spinal column and lower members) that play a part in support, movement or sporting posture with the help of computerised systems for analysing pressure on the soles of the feet
