Madrid, February 21, 2026.- The Minister of Education, Vocational Training and Sports, Milagros Tolón, expressed on Saturday her satisfaction with the historic performance of the Spanish delegation at the Winter Olympic Games in Milan-Cortina d’Ampezzo, where the booty has risen to three medals.

“Today we close our participation in the Winter Olympic Games in Milan-Cortina d’Ampezzo with a full heart. With pride, with gratitude and with emotions that are difficult to explain. We are undoubtedly facing our best historical performance in a Winter Olympic Games”, said the holder of the Sports portfolio at the end of the mixed mountain ski relay test, in which Oriol Cardona and Ana Alonso once again shined to get a bronze.

Protagonists in their respective individual races with a gold and a bronze, today they have crowned together, with the third presea of the national delegation, their brilliant debut in these Winter Olympic Games.

“Spain has not only returned, 54 years later, to the top of the podium”, said the minister in reference to the triumph of Oriol Cardona, “but, for the first time, we chained three consecutive editions with medal (2018, 2022 and 2026)”, an unprecedented milestone that confirms the consolidation and sustained growth of winter sports.

For the minister, “nothing is by chance.” “It is the result of the sustained support, well-planned work and commitment of our athletes, their technical teams, federations and the Spanish Olympic Committee,” he said.

Milagros Tolón also recalled that “the results come when inverted and when accompanied”. “Therefore, the Government will continue to support the development of Spanish sport. So that any boy or girl, in any corner of our country, can dream big and turn their dreams into medals,” he said.

Historical backing of the CSD

The results achieved in the Olympic Games of Milan-Cortina d’Ampezzo coincide with the period of greater economic support by the Government of Spain to the development of winter sports.

As for the three sports federations with representation in these Winter Games - the Royal Spanish Winter Sports Federation, the Royal Spanish Ice Sports Federation and the Spanish Mountain and Climbing Sports Federation - the total allocated in 2025 by the Higher Sports Council (CSD) amounted to 10,178,321.14 euros. That is, more than double the contribution in 2018.

The CSD grant to the Royal Spanish Winter Sports Federation has risen from 2,797,452.59 euros in 2018 to 4,634,470.25 in the past year.

In the case of the Royal Spanish Federation of Ice Sports, state aid has increased from 1,449,523.61 to 2,963,313.87 euros.

For its part, the resources destined for the Spanish Federation of Mountain Sports and Climbing have gone from 604,077.16 euros in 2018 to 2,580,537.02 in 2025, quadrupling in seven years the subsidies to this entity, which indicates a clear commitment to mountain skiing after its incorporation into the Olympic program.

In sum, during the period 2018-2025, these three entities have received more than 56.6 million euros in aid from the CSD.
