The Council of Ministers authorizes the granting of 17 million for Team Spain programs in 2023
The Government gives the green light to the financing of the Team Spain programs of the Superior Sports Council for this year, aimed at intensifying the Olympic and paralympic preparation of teams and athletes, as well as that of other strategic sports disciplines in the projection of the image of Spain.
This amount, derived from the revenues from the joint marketing of the audiovisual rights of football, is added to the 16 million distributed among the Sports Federations last year, of the total of 48 million contemplated for the Team Spain programs during the Olympic cycle.
“Today we are taking another step forward in our ambition to turn the Paris Games into a historic event for Spanish sport,” says the Secretary of State for Sport, Víctor Francos.
Madrid, June 20, 2023. The Council of Ministers has today approved, on the proposal of the Minister of Culture and Sport, Miquel Iceta, the agreement authorizing the Higher Sports Council (CSD) the call corresponding to the year 2023 for aid to the Spanish Sports Federations to carry out the Team Spain programs, for an amount of 17 million euros.
This is the second year in which the Team Spain programmes have been launched, as a result of the Spanish Government’s efforts to intensify the preparation and performance of Spanish sportsmen and women at the forthcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris. The objective is to overcome the results of Barcelona 92 – the glass ceiling of the Spanish Olympism – and to remain a world power of the first order in paralimpism.
Likewise, through the Team Spain Strategic Interest program, it is intended to guarantee continuity in Spanish successes in non-Olympic specialties, but of great weight in the projection of the image of Spain, such as motorcycling or motorsport, among others.
“Today we take another step in our ambition to turn the Paris Games into a historic event for Spanish sport,” said the Secretary of State for Sport and president of the CSD, Víctor Francos. “Team Spain is one of the clearest examples of the Government’s will for our country’s sports sector, through one of the biggest loudspeakers for the projection of Spanish sport and Spain’s own image such as the Olympic and Paralympic Games”.
Investment of 48 million in three years
The 17 million of the present call join the 16 million euros distributed among the Federations during the last year, and that will add in three years (2022, 2023 and 2024) a total of 48 million destined to the Team Spain programs for the Olympic and Paralympic meeting of Paris 2024. A complementary allocation of resources that is nourished by the income obtained from the centralized commercialization of audiovisual rights of the professional football league – the so-called Viana Pacts.
These programs allow the CSD to collaborate with the Federations in improving as much as possible the sports preparation, assessing the degree of individual need of each athlete taking into account issues such as the possible needs of permanent or punctual concentrations in Spain or abroad; the support to prepare in their places of habitual residence; the competition in world qualifying circuits for the Olympic and Paralympic Games; needs of equipment and sports equipment; and technological requirements to improve the preparation, among others.
The Sports Federations are in charge of channelling the funds directed to teams and sportsmen, whose programs have been classified through prior competitive concurrence procedure with the CSD.
