Madrid, 17 December 2024.- On Tuesday, the Government published the “National Strategy for the Promotion of Sport against Sedentarism and Physical Inactivity”, an initiative coordinated by the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sports through the Higher Council of Sports (CSD), which aims to improve the health and well-being of the citizens of our country.
With this Strategy, designed for the period 2025-2030 and equipped with 87 million euros, the Government of Spain is committed to provide the necessary tools and means to ensure that the entire Spanish population has better access to the practice of quality and safe physical and sports activity, thus increasing the levels of physical-sports activity.
“We want Spain to be a country in which being physically active is the norm and not extraordinary behavior and in which its citizens live in a society that facilitates, promotes and supports an active and healthy way of life,” said Pilar Alegría, Minister of Education, Vocational Training and Sports.
The CSD will allocate EUR 87 million from its regular budget during the period 2025-2030 to the development of the actions foreseen in this strategy, which provides for a comprehensive proposal for the promotion of sport and the fight against sedentary lifestyles and physical inactivity.
It initially delves into an analysis of the importance and impact of promoting an active life. An analysis of the legislative and regulatory framework of reference is then carried out in the international context. Then, vision, mission and values are defined. Finally, the document addresses in detail different strategic lines with their respective intervention axes and specific actions.
The “National Strategy for the Promotion of Sport against Sedentary Lifestyles and Physical Inactivity”, adopted by the Council of Ministers, develops its objectives and actions in line with the guidelines of the WHO Strategy for Physical Activity for the European Region 2016-2025 (WHO European Regional Office, 2016) and is built on five strategic lines: the school context, the area of sustainable development, the social environment and the environment.
This Strategy, planned within Component 26 of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, also aims to involve the Governments at the state, regional and local level, as well as the agents involved in the national sports system, the CSD being its main driver.
A government committed to sport and health
With the publication of this Strategy, the Government of Spain reaffirms its commitment to promoting the practice of physical and sports activity with the aim of promoting active lifestyles that improve the quality of life of citizens.
According to the World Health Organization, regular physical activity helps prevent noncommunicable diseases such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and some types of cancer. In addition, it can prevent hypertension, overweight and obesity while improving mental health, quality of life and well-being.
