Turin, 20 January 2025.- The President of the Higher Council of Sports (CSD), José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes, met this Monday in Turin with the President of the International Federation of University Sports (FISU), Leonz Eder, to address issues of common interest to both institutions.
Rodríguez Uribes, who is in the region of Piedmont to accompany the Spanish team at the World University Winter Games, has shared with the president of FISU the CSD project for the development of university sport in the coming years.
Talent detection, dual career support, the strengthening of university competitions and the internationalization of Spain are key axes within the strategic plan that the CSD is preparing together with the Spanish sports federations.
The president of FISU very much appreciated the CSD’s commitment to university sport, as well as the role of Team Spain in these Games, in which the national delegation so far adds thirteen medals.
The Spanish team significantly improves the five pre-existing posts in Lake Placid in 2023, currently occupying the fifth position of the medaller among 54 delegations.
The meeting also included the Director General of Sports, Fernando Molinero, and the Deputy Director of High Competition, Aitor Canibe.
FISU also assisted Secretary-General Matthias Remund.
CSD support for university sport
The Higher Sports Council (CSD) is planning to earmark EUR 1,680,000 in 2025 for the promotion of university sport.
Through different grants, the CSD will contribute to the organization of thirty Spanish University Championships (EUR 550,000), the participation, transfer and equipping of Spanish teams competing in the World University Winter and Summer Games (EUR 450,000) and other international activities (EUR 100,000). In addition, the CSD annually calls for a grant to public and private universities to cover the costs of carrying out works in sports facilities and for the renewal of sports equipment for the organisation of international competitions. In 2025 the contribution will be EUR 580,000.
Favoring the dual career guarantees not only the integral development of athletes, but also helps to retain sports talent, create a base for the high level, promote sports culture and strengthen the international projection of Spain.
