Pedro Sánchez receives the Spanish Olympic team of the Winter Olympic Games of Milano Cortina 2026
February 25, 2026.- The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has received, in the Moncloa Complex, the members of the Spanish Olympic team who participated in the Winter Olympic Games of Milano Cortina 2026, led by the president of the COE, Alejandro Blanco. The meeting was also attended by the Minister of Education, Vocational Training and Sports, Milagros Tolón.
During his speech to the athletes, Sánchez wanted to congratulate a team that “has made history” and are “referents for many young people”, at a very important time for winter sports in our country.
The head of the Executive has made a special recognition for the “brand-new medalists” Oriol Cardona and Ana Alonso. “Your success does not lie exclusively in the fact that you are the most successful Spanish athletes in a Winter Olympic Games”, “your success is courage, it is commitment and it is consistency”, he stressed.
He recalled that we have had to wait 54 years to “break the barrier of obtaining a gold medal, since that mythical triumph of Paquito Fernández Ochoa in Sapporo” and therefore pointed out that Oriol Cardona “is already a legend of the Spanish Olympic sport”. Of Ana Alonso, he stressed that we all feel very identified with her personal history and valued her “desire to overcome” and her ability to achieve things “based on much effort and much sacrifice.”
Finally, Sánchez stressed that the Government has tripled investment in the three federations responsible for winter sports and “our intention is to continue supporting” these sports modalities.
