Government policies related to improving the role of women in Spanish society are also reflected in the world of sport. Sport being a particularly sensitive scenario due to the masculine biased presence and being also a social reference of special visibility, equality policies are especially important in this world.
It is no less true that Spanish women have been acquiring in recent decades a more relevant role in the world of sport, in parallel to their active incorporation in all social dimensions. This principle of participation is clearly documented by the increase in Spanish women’s participation in the different Olympic competitions, with fifty percent in Beijing 2008.
From policies to promote the role of women in society, successive Equality Plans have emerged that since 1990 promote the incorporation of women in all areas where their presence was not equal, as well as the prevention and fight against inequality between women and men.Highlight the IV Equality Plan
2003-2006, which favored the appearance of the
publicizing the Council of Ministers Agreement on Measures to Promote Equality between Women and Men, published in the Official State Gazette on 8 March 2005, and in particular Organic Law 3/2007 of 22 March on Effective Equality between Women and Men, as well as the Strategic Plan for Equal Opportunities 2008-2011.
In this context, under the framework of ORDER PRE/525/2005 of 7 March, the Women and Sport Programs are created, within the Higher Sports Council, in the General Subdirectorate of Sports Promotion and Paralympic Sport.
The main objective of these programs is to promote the participation of women in the field of physical activity and sport on an equal basis with men, overcoming the barriers or obstacles that still today hinder the reality of a practice with gender equality in this field of life.
The promotion of the participation of women must be for all ages, sports modalities, degrees of involvement/competition and professional levels (technical, management, administration and management positions).
To be able to cover this broad objective, coordination with multiple agencies (Women's Institute, Sports Federations, Universities, Autonomous Communities and Commission, etc. ).
The main lines of action include the annual call for grants for specific programmes for women and sport (follow-up and support), the promotion of sporting events in the CAAC, the signing of Collaboration Agreements with other agencies, the organization and participation in congresses, seminars, courses, as well as the planning and conduct of research studies.
