The Higher Sports Council boosts the success of the European Winter Sports Week with more than 300 events in 40 countries
Madrid, February 18, 2026.- The European Winter Sports Week, held from February 1 to 8, has concluded with a highly positive balance: more than 300 events organized in 40 European countries, consolidating this initiative as one of the main continental platforms for the promotion of physical activity, winter sports and healthy lifestyles.
Spain has played a leading role, positioning itself as the second European country with the highest number of activities, with 34 events developed throughout the national territory. This outstanding position is the result of the leadership of the Higher Sports Council (CSD), which was the first European national body to join the project, driving an institutional response that has been replicated by other European countries.
One of the most important milestones of this edition has been the celebration of the Milano-Cortina 2026 Olympic Festival in Sierra Nevada, organized by the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE). This emblematic event has brought winter Olympic sports closer to the general public and strengthened the link of the citizens with the values of Olympism on the way to the Winter Olympic Games of Milano-Cortina 2026.
The success of the European Winter Sports Week has been possible thanks to the work of the European organizing consortium, in which Sport for Education and Health (DES) has played a prominent role, working in close coordination with the Higher Sports Council to mobilize sports, educational and social entities throughout Spain and ensure broad, inclusive and quality participation.
The leadership exercised by the CSD since the first edition has been decisive for this initiative to have reached a truly European dimension. As a result, the European Commission has decided to officially support the European Winter Sports Week from 2027, consolidating it as an annual event within the European policies for the promotion of sport and physical activity.
Throughout this week, the CSD reinforces its commitment to sport as a tool of public health, social cohesion and sustainability, promoting the practice of winter sports and physical activity in natural environments among people of all ages and abilities.
