The Government increases the funding of the Team Spain Elite and Strategic programmes to 19 million euros
Madrid, 17 June 2025.- The Council of Ministers authorised the Spanish Higher Sports Council (CSD) on Tuesday to call for aid to the Spanish sports federations for the Team Spain Elite and Team Spain Strategic programmes, which in 2025 will amount to 19 million euros.
This represents an increase of 2 million euros compared to 2023 and 2024 and 3 million euros compared to 2022, when the Government of Spain launched this new preparation program, which was born with the purpose of boosting the performance of Spanish sportsmen and women -especially, in the Olympic and Paralympic- and to retain technical talent. In short, during the triennium 2022-2024, the Government of Spain allocated 50 million euros to these programs, which represent a before and after in the preparation of athletes and national teams.
To consolidate this positive dynamic during the cycle that leads to Los Angeles 2028, the CSD has decided to turn Team Spain into its parent project for the coming years, with five priority lines of action: Team Spain Future, Team Spain Centres, Team Spain PROAD and Team Spain Health, as well as Team Spain Elite and Strategic.
“We are convinced that, to increase the number of medals in the Olympic and Paralympic Games and achieve the best international representation of Spain, we must continue betting on the development of sport in our country with resources and investment; but also from the demand, with a strategic and transversal look”, reflected the Minister of Education, Vocational Training and Sports, Pilar Alegría.
“That means taking care of all the details of the preparation of the athletes, from their beginnings to their withdrawal. In order to accompany them in the search for excellence, we are trying to ensure the best coordination between the technification, high performance and high level programs. In addition, in recent years we are promoting an ambitious improvement of the High Performance Centers of Madrid, León and Sierra Nevada, owned by the CSD, and contributing to the modernization of facilities of the entire Network of Centers. The other axis of action of Team Spain is the provision of services to athletes, with special attention to their health, training and professional training,” said the minister.
Training and competition are specifically aimed at the 19 million euros with which the Government of Spain will provide in 2025 the Team Spain Elite and Strategic programs, which will allow the sportspeople and technical beneficiaries to decide individually how to guide these aids.
Thus, depending on their needs, they will be able to cover the costs of attending competitions, holding national and international rallies, contracting medical, psychological, nutritional and physiotherapy services and purchasing sports equipment, to name but a few.
About CSD Team Spain
The CSD Team Spain program is an ambitious initiative, created in 2022 by the Superior Sports Council, to boost the performance of Spanish athletes and develop the sports structure of our country.
Considered the parent project of the Higher Sports Council for the coming years, under the CSD Team Spain program, five priority lines of action are currently articulated.
Team Spain Elite and Strategic
Aimed at improving the performance and results of sportspeople and national teams, the Team Spain Elite and Team Spain Strategic programs allow to intensify the preparation of sportspeople and teams that aspire to compete for medals and finalist places in the Olympic and Paralympic Games and enhance those disciplines that project a prominent image of our country in the world.
These programs seek, respectively, the consolidation of Spain as a major power in the Olympic and Paralympic Games and guarantee the good reputation of our country through strategic sports, such as motorsports or motorcycling.
In the Paris 2024 cycle, the economic endowment in three years (2022, 2023 and 2024) was 50 million euros, channelled through the Spanish sports federations.
Team Spain Elite allows to meet the specific needs of the select group of coaches, athletes and teams that, responding to technical criteria, more options have to achieve good results at the international level. The main objective of this program is to increase the number of Spanish medalists and finalists in the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
In addition to helping to improve the preparation of athletes, the Team Spain Elite program is also allowing the retention of technical talent.
For its part, the Team Spain Strategic program supports professional sports, such as tennis or golf, for the development of the base and to facilitate the jump from amateur circuits to professionals.
The 19 million euros destined to Team Spain Elite and Strategic in 2025 will come from 1.5% of the revenues generated by the commercialization of the rights of exploitation of audiovisual contents of professional football competitions.
According to the provisions of article 6.1 of Royal Decree-Law 5/2015, professional football clubs are obliged to allocate 1.5% of these revenues to the Higher Sports Council, which in this way reinvests them in the promotion, promotion and dissemination of the Olympic and Paralympic federated sport, as well as in the internationalization of Spanish sport.
Team Spain Future
With Team España Futuro, the CSD contributes to the development of sports talent in equal opportunities from the ground up.
It brings together the National Sports Technification Programme (PNTD) and the Spanish Championships of School Age for Regional Teams (CESA), in whose development the Higher Sports Council collaborates with the Spanish sports federations and the Autonomous Communities.
Its main objective is to support the technical specialization of athletes from their beginnings at an early age and accompany them during the various stages of their sports specialization in their autonomous area until their consolidation in the elite.
In the field of Sports Technification, the Team España Futuro program aims to coordinate the economic and management efforts made by the CSD, local entities, the Autonomous Communities and the Spanish sports federations to promote young athletes to the high level.
Team Spain Centres
The Team Spain Centers program is closely linked to the Team Spain Future program, since it is oriented to the development of the entire Network of High Performance Centers and Sports Technification of our country.
This programme is developed in two areas of action:
- In the autonomous area, with aid to the Autonomous Communities for the activity and equipment of the Sports Technification Centers (CTD) and Specialized Sports Technification Centers (CETD) classified by the CSD.
- At the national level, with aid to the Spanish sports federations for the activity and equipment of the High Performance Centers (CAR) and Specialized High Performance Centers (CEAR) classified by the CSD.
Team Spain PROAD
With the High Level Athlete Care Program (PROAD), the CSD offers comprehensive and personalized support and advice to the entire group of high level athletes (DAN) in order to facilitate the development of a quality dual career and help in the transition of athletes to a professional career beyond the high level.
A successful dual career must contemplate an integral development, so Team Spain PROAD pivots on three dimensions: the sports, the academic and the professional.
In collaboration with other public institutions and private bodies in the academic and business field, the Team Spain PROAD program has facilitated the employment of high-level athletes since its creation in 2009.
Team Spain Health
Through this program, the CSD guarantees the protection of the health of athletes. Especially, of the teams and athletes integrated in the programs of Team Spain Elite, Team Spain Strategic and Team Spain Future, to whom the Superior Sports Council offers:
- Specialized and multidisciplinary health care to ensure the protection of your health.
- Medical examinations to assess the fitness of sports practice.
- Research and innovation in health and performance.
The Sports Medicine Center actively participates in the development of these three lines. Located within the facilities of the CAR of Madrid, it is recognized as a reference center at the state level in relation to research, monitoring and medical study. It employs more than 40 professionals.
The Sports Medicine Center is oriented to protect the health of the athlete and optimize his performance based on the most up-to-date scientific evidence.
It offers, through its different units, specialized, proactive and sports-focused medical care, making available not only human resources and first-class health equipment, but also diagnosis, assessment, advice, treatment and support during the development of your sports career and after your retirement.
