The Observatory on Equality in Sport establishes a working group for the development of measures to reduce gender inequality
Madrid, 20 February 2025. – On Thursday, the Higher Council of Sports (CSD) hosted a new meeting of the Observatory on Equality in Sport, an inter-ministerial initiative that has been promoted by the Government of Spain to promote real and effective equality between women and men in the sport field and to remove obstacles to the equality of high-level athletes with disabilities.
On
Thursday, the members of the Observatory shared their thoughts on the study “Inequalities of high-level athletes in Spain and measures for effective equality” by David Moscoso and María Martín, which highlights the difficulties that women athletes face throughout their career.
The report points out that 80% of elite athletes have experienced some kind of career inequality, either in the form of less access to resources or less representation in management positions. It also highlights that only 15% of sports sponsorships are devoted to women's sports, which is a major barrier to the development of women's sports careers.
“This report is fundamental to understanding the structural barriers that continue to affect women in sport and allows us to design more effective strategies to ensure their real and effective equality,” said Ana Varela, second vice-president of the Observatory.
One
of the main agreements of the meeting was the formation of an inter-administrative working group that will aim to analyze and develop concrete measures to reduce gender inequality in high-level sport in Spain. This team will be responsible for the coordination between different administrations and sports bodies for the implementation of more inclusive and equitable public policies.
“Gender equality in sport is not just an objective, but an urgent need. With this initiative, we are making progress in the cooperation and construction of a fairer and more representative sports system,” said Bárbara Butragueño, Assistant Director-General for Women and Sport at CSD and First Vice-President of the Observatory.
In its commitment to equity and the elimination of any kind of discrimination in the sport field, the Observatory on Equality in Sport will in the coming months develop concrete actions within the framework of a new inter-administrative working group.
