Rejoice that the trail running World Cup in Canfranc will beat records and put the Aragonese Pyrenees on the map

The Ministry, through the CSD, participates with 400,000 euros in the organization of the event, to be held in the Oscense town from 24 to 28 September

10 April 2025.- The Minister of Education, Vocational Training and Sports, Pilar Alegría, participated this Thursday in the presentation of the World Trail Running Championship poster, to be held in the Oscense town of Canfranc between 24 and 28 September.

In those days, through the Canfranc Mountains you will see the best runners in the world who will compete in five modalities: ‘Uphill’, ‘Classic’ and ‘U20’, in mountain races; and ‘ShortTrail’ and ‘LongTrail’, in ‘trail running’.

“Having made a municipality of 600 inhabitants appear, from September 24, as a focus of natural and sports heritage, is thanks to the effort you have shown since the beginning,” said the minister during her speech, where she was accompanied by the mayor of Canfranc, Fernando Sánchez, and by the poster’s author, the painter Ricardo Montoro.

Alegria has also pointed out the significant economic impact this event can have on Canfranc by recalling that, in the last edition held in Innsbruck (Austria), the championship generated 7.2 million euros. And he celebrated that this edition will beat all the records of participation, with 1,800 athletes from 75 countries. “Never in history have we had these very successful figures,” he stressed.

The minister has trusted that the championship will be “a success” that will also allow athletes, technicians and amateurs to “enjoy the historical and gastronomic heritage of Aragon and the province of Huesca”. In his speech, he also recalled that this autonomous community has already been the protagonist in recent weeks for hosting competitions such as the final of the Basketball Queen’s Cup and that it will soon be with the passing of La Vuelta mujeres.

The Ministry of Education, through the Higher Council of Sports, participates in the organization of this championship with a match of 400,000 euros approved by the Council of Ministers on 18 March. This investment implies recognizing the organization of the World Trail Running Championship as a country event, as it will be one of the most important sports events of the year in Spain.

This project, organized under the umbrella of World Athletic and in collaboration with the International Trail Running Association, was born with the aim of generating a boost to territorial cohesion and economic, social and demographic activity in this region, integrating sports competition, population, history and culture.
