Rodríguez Uribes claims sport as an integrating element in the European Union

Madrid, 4 April 2025.- The Higher Council of Sports and the Offices of the European Commission and of the European Parliament in Spain organized this Friday a day marking the beginning of the commemorative actions of the Day of Europe.

Spanish sport will be added to its commemoration on 9 May, a date that makes it possible to highlight the unity of the Member States of the European Union.

The president of the CSD, José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes, has focused his intervention on the role of sport as an integrating element and has highlighted its relevance in the continent.

“Sport is increasingly important in Europe, where it is not just an appendix to other institutions, but has its own personality,” said Rodríguez Uribes.

The Director of the European Commission’s Representation in Spain, Lucas González, and the Director of the European Parliament’s Office in Spain, María Andrés, also took part in a conference which highlighted the importance of sport as an element of union and cohesion.

For his part, the president of FIBA Europa, Jorge Garbajosa, and the athletes Sergio Garrote and Lucía Martín Português have held a colloquium on the values of the sport.

With this event, the CSD and the European Commission and European Parliament Offices in Spain are launching the commemorative actions of European Day, which will take place on 9 May.

The CSD and the Spanish sports federations will contribute to the promotion of European values through different initiatives.
