The Ryder Cup of 2031 will be played in Camiral
Spain will host its second Ryder Cup 34 years after Seve Ballesteros led the European team to victory in Valderrama
The Ryder Cup will return to Spain in 2031 when Camiral, the resort located on the Costa Brava near Barcelona, hosts for the first time this biennial competition that faces Europe and the United States.
Camiral will follow in the footsteps of Bethpage Black in New York (2025), Adare Manor in Ireland (2027) and Hazeltine National in Minnesota (2029) as the venue for the most important team competition in the world of golf.
It will be the second time that Spain has hosted the Ryder Cup, 34 years after the legendary Seve Ballesteros captained the European team that won in Valderrama in 1997 and, in this way, our country will become the first in continental Europe to receive the competition twice. This honor recognizes the transcendental contribution of Spanish golf to the history of the Ryder Cup, since eleven Spaniards have represented the European team, the second highest figure in the continent just behind England.
The Costa Brava and Barcelona, spectacular references, will serve as the backdrop for the Ryder Cup of 2031 and will welcome visitors from all over the world who will find an area famous for its impressive coastlines, for its first-class hospitality and its extraordinary cultural heritage.
The Costa Brava and Barcelona have a great tradition as hosts of the most important international sporting events, such as the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992, the Spanish F1 Grand Prix, the Catalan MotoGP Grand Prix, and the usual Champions League and La Liga events at the Camp Nou, F field. C. Barcelona.
As part of the agreement for the region to host the Ryder Cup in six years, Estrella Damm, the brewery company founded in Barcelona in 1876, will become the Official Beer of the Ryder Cup of 2031. In addition, he will be the main sponsor of the Estrella Damm Catalunya Championship, a tournament of the DP World Tour that will be held for five years from 2026 and whose editions of 2028, 2029 and 2030 will take place in Camiral.
Guy Kinnings, Executive Director of the European Tour Group: “Today’s announcement not only serves to recognize Camiral as one of the best venues in Europe, but also honors the momentous contribution of Spanish golf to the history of the Ryder Cup.
»The Ryder Cup has grown significantly since the last time Spain hosted it in 1997. It is one of the main sporting events in the world and generates significant economic benefits and a global impact for the region and the country that hosts it, so we are delighted to take it for the first time to the Costa Brava and Barcelona, and for the second time to Spain.
“This agreement is the result of many months of productive talks, and we are very grateful not only to Denis O’Brien and his Camiral team, but also to the Generalitat de Catalunya, the Government of Spain, the Diputació de Girona and Barcelona Turisme for their vision of the future and commitment to hosting this important global event. We have also garnered significant support from the private sector on the Costa Brava and Barcelona, such as Estrella Damm’s long-term commitment, which will play a key role on the road to the 2031 Ryder Cup as we will introduce the region to audiences around the world.”
José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes, President of the Higher Sports Council: “The Spanish Government celebrates the election of Camiral as the venue for the 2031 Ryder Cup, a sporting event with a global dimension that will project the image of our country to millions of spectators around the world.
»In addition to being one of the most prestigious competitions on the international sports calendar, the Ryder Cup is an exceptional platform to show Spain’s ability to successfully host major 21st century events, combining first-class infrastructures, an incomparable natural environment and a globally recognized tourist, cultural and gastronomic offer.
»The fact of hosting the Ryder Cup for the second time —34 years after the historic edition held in Valderrama— will consolidate Spain as an international reference in the organization of major sporting events. Without doubt, this designation is also a recognition of the legacy of Spanish golf and our country’s commitment to sport – a sector that is also an industry that generates employment and economic growth – sustainable tourism and organizational excellence.”
Albert Dalmau, Councillor for the Presidency of the Government of Catalonia: “Hosting the Ryder Cup is a commitment to the territorial cohesion of the country and an opportunity to attract quality tourism linked to sport, which will generate a positive economic impact throughout the territory. It shows that Catalonia, once again, has the greatest ambition to position itself on the international stage and host top-level competitions.”
Berni Álvarez, Conseller d’Esports de la Generalitat de Catalunya: “All the parties involved in signing this agreement are working hard to ensure that the benefits of the Ryder Cup reach every corner of Catalonia. We have defined a social legacy that will materialize through a comprehensive program with sports and social initiatives to promote the practice of golf, promote social cohesion, publicize golf courses throughout the region and implement sustainable actions. Without doubt, it is one of the sporting events with the greatest global impact, the result of a long and intense process of negotiations that guarantee a firm path to this historic milestone from a sporting, social and environmental perspective.”
Jordi Clos, President of the Executive Committee of Turisme de Barcelona: “Turisme de Barcelona actively joins this great event that reaffirms the role of Barcelona as a gateway to Catalonia and an engine of quality, diversified and sustainable tourism. The city offers a wide and quality offer and is ready to meet the demands of a demanding public, while also serving as a link with the rest of the region. Barcelona, with its powerful and internationally recognized brand, is presented as a key factor in the positioning of Catalonia as a premium destination before a global public of quality. The Ryder Cup is a great opportunity for the whole country, and also for Barcelona and we will be there to open it up to the world.”
Miquel Noguer, President of the Diputació de Girona: “Hosting the Ryder Cup represents a unique opportunity for the regions of Girona and for the whole country. We are talking about one of the sporting events with the greatest global impact, with a great economic impact on the territory, an impact that will not be limited to the days of the competition, but will cover the previous and subsequent years. For the Diputació and for the Costa Brava Girona Tourist Board, golf is a strategic product. It helps combat seasonality, increases tourism spending and positions us as a global benchmark in this area.”
Denis O’Brien and Catherine O’Brien, owners of Camiral: “Hosting the Ryder Cup means fulfilling a dream we have had for a long time: to bring the most important golf sporting event to Catalonia and Spain. It will generate immediate economic benefits for the communities of Girona, Costa Brava and Barcelona, boosting high-level golf and leisure tourism in the years leading up to the 2031 Ryder Cup, and will offer a lasting legacy that will be based on the reputation generated by hosting one of the most important sporting events in the world. We would like to thank the Generalitat, the Government of Spain and the Royal Spanish Golf Federation for their support and we look forward to continuing our great relationship with Ryder Cup Europe.”
Juan Guerrero–Burgos, President of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation: “It is an honour for Spain to host the Ryder Cup for the second time in history. The previous experience in Valderrama in 1997 was extraordinary. The economic impact, media coverage and, above all, the legacy for our sport, tourism and the spread of golf in our country were incredible.
“Spanish golf has grown significantly over the past 25 years due to the spectacular influence of that 1997 Ryder Cup, which helped make golf accessible to everyone through the construction of many public golf courses and inspired new generations of players.
“The union of all public institutions and the support of Camiral will make possible another unforgettable Ryder Cup in 2031, where we will also pay tribute to all the Spanish golfers who have contributed so much to its history, with the legacy of Severiano Ballesteros always present”.
The Spanish players have had numerous successes in the European Ryder Cup team since 1979, and Sergio García has the record of scoring in both teams with 28.5 points in ten participations.
The legendary pair composed by Seve Ballesteros and José María Olazábal is also the most successful in history, as together they earned 12 points for the European team, and as Ballesteros in 1997 Olazábal also led Europe to a spectacular victory as captain by leading the team in the “Medinah Miracle” in 2012.
Ballesteros and Antonio Garrido were the first players from continental Europe to represent Europe in the 1979 tournament at The Greenbrier, and were later accompanied in this competition by José María Cañizares, Manuel Piñero and José Rivero. Later, Olazábal and Antonio’s son, Ignacio, were part of the winning team captained by Ballesteros in Valderrama 18 years later, along with deputy captain Miguel Angel Jiménez (who also participated in four Ryder Cups individually).
Subsequently, Rafa Cabrera Bello was part of the European team in 2016 and Jon Rahm has participated in the last three editions of the Ryder Cup, two of them culminated with local triumph in Paris in 2018 and Rome two years ago. Both players forged successful pairs with Garcia in 2016 and 2021, respectively.
Since 1979, when players from continental Europe joined this biennial competition, there has always been at least one Spaniard in the European team.
Camiral, the best golf and wellness resort in Spain, opened in 1999 and was acquired by Irish businessman Denis O’Brien in 2008. It has hosted the Spanish Open of the DP World Tour on three occasions, in 2000, 2009 and 2014, and the Catalunya Championship in 2022, in addition to the final phase of the DP World Tour classification school for nine consecutive years, from 2008 to 2016.
Since its inauguration, when it was called PGA Catalunya, it has been part of the very prestigious catalog of resorts of European Tour Destinations.
Camiral, a Quinta do Lago Resort, is in the north-east of Spain, five minutes from Girona Costa Brava Airport and one hour from Barcelona. The 540-hectare wooded estate boasts two championship tours, including the highly reputable Stadium Course. It also houses the PGA NATIONAL Golf Academy and its practice facilities, which feature the largest practice course with Trackman and the largest short play area in Europe.
