The Director-General of Sports participates in a working day on safety at major sports events at UN headquarters

The meeting convened public policy makers, experts and professionals who were able to know the balance sheet of the Paris Games 2024
  • Fernando Molinero spoke at the session dedicated to public-private cooperation, where he reported on the creation of an Interministerial Commission for the preparation and organization of the 2030 World Cup.

  • Australia, as host country for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, was also present at a conference on the lessons learned following the recent Paris 2024 celebration.

Madrid, 12 March 2025.- The Director-General of Sports, Fernando Molinero, has participated in the event “Securing the Legacy: Paris Balance 2024 for Future Major Sports Events”, held at the United Nations Organization (UN) headquarters in New York.

This meeting, attended by representatives of the UN Member States, convened public policy makers, experts and professionals to promote the exchange of knowledge in relation to safety at mass sports events.

The central axis was the recent Paris Games 2024, whose success was based on the implementation of cutting-edge practices in security, border control and international police cooperation.

The head of Cabinet of the National Coordinating Body for Security at the 2024 Olympic Games, Atonin Flament, explained the challenges they had to face at the security level, as well as the good practices and lessons learned.

Voviette Morgan, Senior Vice President for Security at the Los Angeles Olympic Games 2028, and Nicodemus Liotti, Director of the State Police of the Republic of Italy, host of the Milan Winter Olympics 2026 and the 2026 Mediterranean Winter Olympics 2026 Winter Olympics and the 2026 Winter Olympics. Both of them detailed how their countries are preparing to ensure security in these next two events.

The second session, on “The responsibility of international and continental sports federations: public-private cooperation as a pillar for the success of sporting events”, was attended by FIFA, UEFA, FIBA and the International Olympic Committee.

Andrey Reis, head of Operations and Security at the 2026 World Cup, was also involved, to be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

 

Coordination between governments and competition organisers

At this meeting, the representatives of Qatar, France and the United States highlighted the necessary coordination between the different ministerial departments for the successful organization of events of this magnitude, as well as between the Governments and the organizers of the competitions.

In this context, Fernando Molinero informed attendees about the recent establishment of the Interministerial Commission for the preparation and organisation of the 2030 World Cup, hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco, and of the Spanish Presidency of the specific group of the European Union’s Open Method of Coordination “Combating Hate Speech in Sport”.

Representatives of Australia, as host country for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, were also present on this working day.

The third session, for its part, underlined the importance of international cooperation in the fight against terrorism during major sporting events.

In addition, the progress of the Global Sport Programme was shared and thought was given to the protection of human rights and freedoms in this area.
