Madrid, 20 December 2024. The Minister of Education, Vocational Training and Sports, Pilar Alegría, met this Friday with the president of FIBA Europe, Jorge Garbajosa, who has transferred the commitment of the Spanish Government to support the celebration of the ‘Final to Six’ of the Euroleague women basketball in Zaragoza in 2025, 2026 and 2027.

“From the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sports we will enthusiastically support FIBA Europe in organising the final phase of the Women’s Euroleague for three consecutive editions in Zaragoza, a city that draws passion for sport and for basketball,” said Minister Pilar Alegría.

FIBA Europe designated the Spanish city as the host for the next three years of the new final phase of the Women’s Euroleague, which will bring together the continent’s six best teams. Spain will therefore be the epicenter of European female basketball in 2025, 2026 and 2027.

Zaragoza will also host the Copa de la Reina in 2025. For its part, La Palma will host in 2025 the female Eurobasket of sub-18 category.

“The impetus of women’s competitions and selections is one of the strategic lines that the Higher Council of Sports (CSD) is developing together with the Spanish Basketball Federation, not only through the organization of major championships but also through the improvement of the working conditions of the players,” added Pilar Alegría.

Precisely, the CSD has granted a grant of EUR 1 million to the Spanish Basketball Federation in order to promote the professionalisation of the Women's League.

In addition, Spain is one of the most leading countries in the world in basketball 3x3, as evidenced by the female selection with the conquest of the silver medal at the last Paris Olympic Games 2024. Basketball 3x3 is one of the disciplines with the highest capacity for development at the national and international levels and has been another of the CSD’s major bets in the past Olympic cycle.

As pointed out during the meeting by José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes, the CSD has acquired from its regular budget a 3x3 basketball court for the CAR of Madrid where Spanish teams are usually trained and concentrated.
