Pilar Alegría receives tennis player Martín de la Puente, champion of Wimbledon in doubles in 2025
Madrid, July 29, 2025.- The Minister of Education, Vocational Training and Sports, Pilar Alegría, received this Tuesday the tennis player Martín de la Puente, a new champion of the Wimbledon tournament in the modality of wheelchair doubles.
The 26-year-old Galician player is the great national figure in this specialty after recently reaping his second Grand Slam title.
Champion of the United States Open in 2022, Martin de la Puente added the Wimbledon tournament to his list of winners after defeating Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid in the final of the London ‘major’, together with the Dutchman Ruben Spaargaren, the British.
“Martín de la Puente represents the best of Spanish sport: talent, effort, humility and an ability to overcome that inspires the whole country. His victory at Wimbledon is a triumph that goes beyond the track; it is an example of what it means not to surrender,” said Pilar Alegría during the reception ceremony held at the Ministry’s headquarters.
Martín de la Puente has been accompanied by the President of the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET), Miguel Díaz Román, and by the Secretary of State for Sport and President of the Superior Sports Council (CSD), José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes.
The match also allowed Minister Pilar Alegría to congratulate the player from Vigo for his recent victories at the Belgian Open last week.
Martín de la Puente won the American Casey Ratzlaff in the individual finals, with whom he formed a successful double.
Belgium’s is the third win of the season for De la Puente on an individual level, having also won the ITF 1 Series tournaments in Royan (France) and Seoul (South Korea), and the sixth in doubles.
In addition, two Masters titles (2022 and 2024) and the bronze medal won together with Daniel Caverzaschi at the Paralympic Games in Paris 2024 stand out in Martín de la Puente’s winners.
