"I appreciate the Commissioner's interest in knowing the policies that are making Spain a benchmark in the promotion of equality and inclusion within the European Union," said the President of the Higher Sports Council, José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes, at the end of the meeting.
Madrid, 7 May 2025.- The President of the Superior Sports Council (CSD), José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes, held a meeting this Wednesday with the European Commissioner for Intergenerational Equity, Youth, Culture and Sport, Glenn Micaleff, with whom he shared the main areas of the Work Plan for Sport for the period 2024-2029 that are of interest to Spain.
The recent publication by the Government of Spain of the “National Strategy for the promotion of sport against sedentarism and physical inactivity” has been the central axis of the meeting, taking into account that all member countries of the European Union have placed among their priority lines of action the promotion of an active lifestyle, for its benefits for the physical and mental health of citizens.
In this sense, Rodríguez Uribes has broken down the axes of this National Strategy, which will be endowed with a budget of 87 million euros during the period 2025-2030.
The president of the CSD has also explained that one of the great novelties of the Sports Law, approved in December 2022, is the recognition of sports practice as a right and its consideration as an essential activity.
“In addition, I appreciate the Commissioner’s interest in knowing the policies that are making Spain a reference in the promotion of equality and inclusion within the European Union and the use we are making of the NextGenerationEU Funds to promote the modernization of the sports sector, being the only country that has included it as a tractor element within the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan,” said Rodríguez Uribes.
The leadership of Spain
For his part, Glenn Micaleff pointed out: “It has been a pleasure for me to meet today with José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes, president of the Spanish Higher Sports Council. We discussed our common commitment to strengthening the European sports model, a commitment based on solidarity, inclusiveness and opportunity for all.”
“Spain’s leadership in the field of equality in sport – from equal rewards for Olympic and Paralympic athletes to greater support for women’s football – shows how national action can drive common European goals. We have also discussed the importance of promoting physical activity to foster healthier and more resilient societies. I want us to work together to defend a sports model that values citizen participation, accessibility and equity,” said Glenn Micaleff, European Commissioner for Intergenerational Equity, Youth, Culture and Sport.
