The Government will provide EUR 4.4 million in aid for movements of equipment and sportsmen Canarian residents, the Balearic Isles, Ceuta and Melilla

Madrid, 29 August 2018.The minister of culture and sport, Jose Guirao has presided today in the Superior Council of sports, accompanied by María José Free, president of this body, the signature of the covenant of insularity for aid to the teams and athletes residing in the Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, and the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla.
As A result of this agreement, the government spent EUR 4.4 million of general state budgets to cover the costs of travel for sportsmen and island teams when they participate in official competitions state in nature and not professional that are approved in the different Spanish sports federations, Olympic Games, Olympic not, and not Paralympics Paralympics. In this first call, aid reaches the 1.8 million euros.
This heading of general state budgets represents a marked increase – more than double one, compared to the previous year, in which the amount for journeys to the peninsula was 1.8 million euros.
Following the signing, the minister of culture and sport, Jose Guirao, explained that the purpose of this aid is “ geographic mobility is not a handicap and that all athletes can participate in competitions on equal terms, without discrimination by geographical origin ”.
